Heritage Shore

When I first drove into Liverpool in the early 1970's I encountered a working city in transition. A city unable to adjust to a steep decline as a trading port that had brought wealth and development imperatives over many centuries.

The legacy of that wealth was clearly established and visible through the city centre though the dock areas were mainly unused and cordoned off. Now both sectors wear that rich and significant history with flourishing pride and visitor numbers swell the central areas engrossed in the buzz of a unique sense of place that spins around heritage, culture and commerce.

The idea of what is presented as heritage intrigues me as a visual artist. The city is continually responding to new challenges - buildings are restored, re-purposed or rebuilt and objects such as propellers, anchors and buoys are placed in prominent positions to remind us that 'we are not what we were'.

These considerations have informed the multimedia artworks that I have grouped as Heritage Shore.
